MODERATE WALK FROM WENDOVER USING AYLESBURY RING AND RIDGEWAY TRACKS

Start:  From A41(T) turn onto A4011 Wendover road. Drive pass RAF Halton. When you reach small roundabout take 2nd left uphill and and take road to left uphill then first left into Barlow Road. Try to park at end of road near the bridleway . 
Distance:  approx 10 miles
Time: Approx 5hrs. includes lunch stop for 20 minutes
Difficulty:  Moderate.  (30% downhill, 30% uphill   40% straight)
Dog Friendly:  Mostly tracks. Some places can be muddy.

0945   Park car in Barlow road near to bridleway. Follow bridleway (Tarmac road) uphill
0950   Reach forked junction. Follow steep right path to junction. At junction turn right following Public footpath. This is gentle flat path which skirts the hill. Good view of  Aylesbury Vale and Wendover.

1005  Will meet a wide path to right which goes downhill. Take this path and turn right at road. Follow road until you reach a junction.

1015 Turn right until you come to another junction


1020  Turn right again. You will pass school on the left. Keep walking until you reach gate at front of church.

1025 Opposite church gate follow the Ridgeway path sign. Go pass Hampden pond on left until you reach the second gate on left. Follow path through the park. On reaching the road turn left and follow road

1030. When you reach 'T' junction turn right and cross road until you reach balcome road on left. The road is uphill. Cross over bridge. Walk along road until you reach sign post on right opposite houses.

1040 Follow 'Aylesbury Ring' sign post across field. Climb over stile and another stile leading to road. Cross road keeping to the Aylesbury ring. Follow all Aylesbury ring signs.

1105 Wellwick Farm. Follow footpath through farm over stile then turn left uphill to another stile. Keep following Aylesbury ring signs.

1125 Reach road you turn left across the road to Aylesbury ring signpost. Follow path over several stiles. Be careful not to touch electric fence on right.

1130 - Walk pass NO ENTRY blue sign following tarmac road.

1138 -  On reaching two stiles take left stile following Aylesbury ring.

1140 -  Over the second stile you turn left an walk uphill towards Ellesborough church. Walk to right of church were you will see two benches. A good place to have lunch.


1145 - Lunch stop at Ellesbourgh church looking towards Beacon Hill.

1210 - Walk through get to road and turn left across road taking footpath to stile. Follow Circular footpath sign. Follow the path uphill till you are below Beacon hill.


1215. - At this point you have the choice to climb the steep hill to see the wonderful views or carry along path. It will take you 5 to 10 minutes to climb hill but is well worth it.

 


1230 - follow path through wood until you meet cross-roads. Walk over to gate and follow the Circular walk footpath. Keep to right of fence adjacent to Whorle wood. 


1245 - Reach gate follow the Ridgeway footpath sign. Along this path you will have good views of  Chequers: The Country Home of Britain's Prime Ministers . This is where the prime minister has ministerial meetings with heads of state etc.


1258 - Reach next signpost for Ridgeway. Turn right over stile and follow path along fence(Maple Wood)  to the Chequers entrance.

1305 - climb over stile over the main driveway and then climb over another stile following the Ridgeway path until you come to main road.

1308 - walk over road following the Ridgeway path. A short distance you will see post. Take Icknield way blue arrow which is the middle track.

1315 - Meet cross roads. Take the Ridgeway path which is straight across uphill.. Follow those signs which have the ACORN sign. Difficult terrain as it is not clear were the posts are.

1330 - On reaching road take right turn uphill for a short distance until you come to Ridgeway sign. Follow the sign.


1345 - Reaching the monument at Coombe hill you will see views of Wendover and the Aylesbury plain.

Follow the Ridgeway path towards Wendover. You will be going downhill.

1415 - On reaching bench go straight ahead


1425 - Reaching Wendover road turn right and follow this through the town until you meet small roundabout.

 Recommend you stop at the Rumsey's Chocolaterie for excellent coffee and cakes.  

1435 -  Go across roundabout towards Tring. Take second turning on right uphill until you reach cross roads in housing estate. Take right turn and follow until you reach your car.
